Shared finances come with a compromise: transparency usually means sacrificing privacy. Whether you are managing shared family expenses, splitting rent with roommates, or tracking project budgets with colleagues, most finance apps store your group data in a way that allows the server—or potential intruders—to access it.
At Simple Money Tracker, we believe shared data should be as private as personal data. That is why we are proud to introduce Collaborative Zero-Knowledge Encryption for groups, now available in version 4.6.0.
The Challenge: True Privacy in a Group Setting
In a single-user app, one Data Encryption Key (DEK) protects all your records. But how do you handle a group of six people who all need to read and write shared data, without ever giving the server access to a 'master key'?
If you use a single key for the entire group, the server would have to distribute it—an act that instantly breaks the Zero-Knowledge promise.
Our Solution: The 'Wrapped Key' System
We rebuilt group collaboration from the ground up to ensure your data stays truly private. Here is how it works:
- Unique Group Keys: Every group generates its own Group DEK upon creation. This key encrypts everything in the group: expenses, debts, goals, and investments.
- Key Wrapping: The Group DEK is never stored in plain text. Instead, it is encrypted individually for each member using their personal DEK. This creates a 'wrapped key' stored alongside the member's profile.
- Collaborative Security: Each member decrypts group data using their own personal key. If a member leaves the group, their access is revoked instantly—their specific wrapped key is destroyed, while the rest of the group continues seamlessly.
Result: True collaboration, zero shared master keys, and absolute privacy.
A Seamless Migration: Why You Won't Notice a Thing
Migrating existing groups to a new encryption standard is complex. Usually, it would require every member to be online at the same time to re-encrypt data—an impossible task for larger groups.
We opted for a 'Lazy Migration' strategy. When a member accesses a shared record, our system detects the old encryption format, decrypts it using the user's personal key, re-encrypts it with the new Group DEK, and saves it back. Your data is upgraded organically and securely, without you ever having to lift a finger.
More Than Just Security: Enhanced Group Features
Beyond the encryption overhaul, version 4.6.0 introduces several UX improvements designed to make managing group finances smoother than ever:
- Simplified Invitation Management: A new Pending Invitations Card to manage requests at a glance.
- Improved Interaction: Clickable URLs in descriptions and one-click Group ID copying.
- Performance & Navigation: New event filters for long activity logs and a 200-event performance cap.
- Data Hygiene: Enhanced cleanup flows to ensure that when a member leaves, their data references are fully purged—no orphaned records, no stale references.
